The Temporary Landscaper, under general supervision, performs a wide variety of grounds maintenance and landscaping tasks, including the operation of mobile and mechanized equipment employed on such tasks; individually to perform tree trimming, removal and maintenance crews on routine assignments, and to perform related work as required.

The Temporary Landscaper will support, both publicly and privately, the principles of the Detroit Zoological Society, maintain a professional manner when dealing with all constituencies, and always preserve a high level of confidentiality.

This job description is by no means all inclusive and may be subject to change during a performance period due to the needs of the Detroit Zoological Society and its leadership.  This document will be reviewed on a continual basis and will be modified as needed.

Authority and Accountability:

The Temporary Landscaper, has the authority to carry out the job requirements and responsibilities and is accountable to the Landscape Manager.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Subject to general assignments, working both alone and with a crew, with responsibility for proper operation and care of equipment and for the quality of results, performs a wide variety of grounds maintenance and landscaping tasks including the operation of mobile and mechanized labor-saving equipment employed therein.
  • Assists in the culture and care of trees: Uses rope harness to climb and trim trees; sprays pesticides with a mist blowing machine; transplants trees with use of tractor loader, hydraulic pull-shovel, and trucks; raises the grade about trees with a bulldozer; removes trees by use of a bulldozer, power chain saws, a powered stumper, a crush chipper and dump trucks; and mulches, fertilizes, waters, and assists in surgery on trees.
  • Assists in completing landscaping projects: Grades land areas, lake shore lines and terraces with use of a bulldozer; excavates foundations, pull-shovel, footings, utility trenches and reflection ponds with a bulldozer, hydraulic tractor loader and dump trucks; discs, plows, fertilizes and seeds turf areas with a farm tractor and implements; cuts sod with a sod cutter and lays turf areas; transplants shrubbery and flowers; prepares flower beds with a Roto-tiller and hand tools. Builds rustic, cable and wire fences with the use of a farm tractor and post hole auger attachment. Builds asphalt drive and walkways including the use of a tractor loader, bulldozer and one-ton asphalt roller; builds animal exhibits, moats, catch basins, lake shorelines, outdoor furniture and playground equipment including use of a bulldozer, tractor loader and hydraulic pull-shovel to grade, excavate, and backfill. Operates compressors, pneumatic tools, generators, pumps, and concrete mixers on construction work.
  • Assists in performing grounds maintenance work: Leads a small grass cutting crew and individually cuts grass with power mowers and a farm tractor with a mower; trims flowers, hedges and shrubbery with power shears and by hand; leads a clean-up crew; operates a street sweeper, packer truck, tractor broom, tractor loader, vacuum leaf collector, and dump truck to pick up, load and haul waste debris; loads, hauls, and unloads materials, equipment, supplies and waste on pickup, dump, stake and packer trucks; removes snow with a bulldozer and tractor loader; applies pesticides to flowers and turf areas; and digs animal graves and buries animals with a tractor loader and pull-shovel.
  • Services mechanized equipment; fuels, lubricates, winterizes, maintains tire inflation, coolant, battery water and engine oil levels; steam cleans; repairs forestry and park maintenance tools.
  • As assigned, assist with a variety of special events, grounds tasks, mowing, weeding, general labor, snow removal, refuse and manure collection, and construction projects.
  • Such other duties and responsibilities may be assigned from time to time.

Working Conditions:

Work under conditions including adverse weather, outside environment and heights. Exposure to toxic chemicals (pesticides, cleaning agents, etc.)

Physical Requirements:

Physical work is a primary part of the job; must be able to lift at least 50 pounds.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (Minimum):

  • Education equivalent to completion of two years
  • Reasonable experience in forestry and grounds maintenance work and in the operation and maintenance of self-propelled construction machines.
  • Reasonable skill in using common construction and gardening tools
  • Reasonable ability to lead and instruct subordinates, to coordinate the operation of the various controls for vehicular equipment, and to make necessary minor repairs, maintenance, and service adjustments on equipment.
  • Mechanical aptitude, industry, willingness to perform any assigned task
  • Physically and mentally capable of performing all the duties of the classification
  • Must possess a valid State of Michigan Pesticide Registered Technician License
