The selected individual will work with the Education team to evaluate programs, exhibits and/or visitor experiences. This project-based internship will offer opportunities to develop evaluation instruments and collect data with Zoo and/or Nature Center visitors. Methodologies may include observations, exhibit prototyping, visitor interviews and surveys. The intern will also assist with data entry, analysis and reporting.

The Evaluation Intern will support, both publicly and privately, the principles of the Detroit Zoological Society.  They will support and enhance a clean, safe, enjoyable, and educational experience at the Detroit Zoological Society facilities by actively engaging in the enforcement of Customer Service Standards, and specifically by knowing and understanding the Detroit Zoological Society's "SCOPE" of service, animal care, community relations and park appearance guidelines; by enforcing safety and security policies, and following all other policies set by the organization. The Evaluation Intern will maintain a professional manner when dealing with all constituencies and always preserve a high level of integrity, professionalism and confidentiality.

This description of duties and responsibilities is by no means all inclusive and may be subject to change during a performance period due to the needs of the Detroit Zoological Society and its leadership. This document will be reviewed on a continual basis and will be modified as needed.

Authority and Accountability

The Evaluation Intern has the responsibility to follow the education department philosophy, goals and objectives and is accountable to the education department. The curator of exhibit design is designated as the key supervisor for all aspects of the internship and to act as a liaison with the intern's university for academic purposes.

Principle Duties and Responsibilities

  • Actively participate in team/department meetings
  • Conduct research and write literature review(s) to inform project(s)
  • Develop evaluation instruments
  • Collect data with Zoo and/or Nature Center visitors
  • Assist with data entry and analysis
  • Report and visualize findings

Working Conditions

The work environment will require work both indoors and outdoors with exposure to seasonal weather conditions.

Physical Requirements

The ability to perform principal duties is required. The Evaluation Intern must be able to lift and move objects weighing up to 25 pounds. Able to perform moderate physical effort on a daily basis such as walking, bending, stooping, lifting, and standing for an extended period of time. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Studying research and evaluation, museum studies, sociology, psychology, anthropology, learning sciences or other related field
  • Comfortable working in a dynamic, fast-paced and collaborative work environment
  • Highly motivated, good problem solver and detail-oriented
  • Ability to clearly convey information verbally and in writing; interest in data visualization is desirable
  • Ability to be personable and professional interacting with Zoo and Nature Center guests
  • Ability to receive, contribute and incorporate constructive criticism
  • Ability to learn new evaluation/research methodologies and skills relatively quickly
  • Previous experience working in an informal learning environment preferred
  • Experience with qualitative and quantitative data analysis preferred, but not essential


  • Ability to commit for a minimum of a 10 week internship and work at least 12 hours per week
  • Currently enrolled student in good standing at a university; ability to earn credit for the internship
  • Some weekend availability for data collection
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel; internet proficiency
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
  • Creative, friendly, enthusiastic
