The Belle Isle Nature Center, a facility of the Detroit Zoological Society, holds nature summer camps for the children of Detroit. We seek motivated, dynamic individuals who want to make a difference and share nature with youth in a summer day camp setting. Camp will take place on Belle Isle, near downtown Detroit.

The chosen candidate will work with the Camp Director to coordinate daily camp activities and support camp staff in a summer day camp. There will be a maximum of 36 campers each week.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assisting the Camp Director in overseeing daily activities, general camp operations and programs to ensure a quality experience for campers.
  • Supporting individual students who may need extra assistance.
  • Welcoming parents and campers during check-in and check-out.
  • Supporting, coaching, and providing feedback to teenage Counselors in Training.
  • Filling in for teachers as necessary and providing breaks for teachers and assistant teachers.
  • Organizing camp supplies, monitoring supply levels, and assisting in placing supply orders.
  • Preparing program supplies for teachers.
  • In concert with the Camp Director, responding to incidents.
  • Acting as a role model and resource for campers and staff at all times.
  • Communicating effectively with campers, the Assistant Teacher, Camp Coordinator, Camp Director and parents.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Previous camp experience is helpful but not necessary.

Programs are held outdoors, in a variety of weather conditions. All candidates must attend training (June 24 - June 28, 2019) prior to the start of camp and be available for all seven weeks of camp (July 1 - August 16, 2019).


  • 21 years of age or older
  • Must be an effective team player with excellent communication and people skills.
  • Must be able to coordinate effectively with the entire staff, Camp Director, and campers' parents.
  • Must be available for the entire camp season, June 24 - August 16, 2019, Monday - Friday.
  • Must hold a valid operator license with an excellent driving record, chauffeur license preferred.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Experience and enthusiasm for working with students of varying ability levels and backgrounds.
  • Completion of a Bachelor's degree in General Science, Education, Zoology, Biology or other related field.
  • Two years of experience working with children in a formal or informal setting.
  • Familiar with concepts and issues of biology, environmental or life sciences, environmental education, animal welfare and similar disciplines.

Work Environment: Work will be performed in an outdoor environment in various conditions. Employees must be able to stand and walk for long periods of time. While performing the duties of these jobs, the employee is exposed to seasonal weather conditions and the total Zoo environment. The noise level in the work environment is moderate. The employee must be able to lift and move 25 pounds. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
