The Education Graphic Design Intern will work with the education team to develop and refine interpretive labels and presentation materials. The internship will include opportunities to work with experts from multiple departments to convey information about animals, conservation initiatives and educational programming to DZS guests. Projects may include modifying existing designs, creating new design templates, displaying data, gathering photo assets and creating digital illustrations.

The Education Graphic Design Intern will support, both publicly and privately, the principles of the Detroit Zoological Society.  He/She will support and enhance a clean, safe, enjoyable, and educational experience at the Detroit Zoo facilities by actively engaging in the enforcement of Customer Service Standards, and specifically by knowing and understanding the Detroit Zoological Society's "SCOPE" of service, animal care, community relations and park appearance guidelines; by enforcing safety and security policies, and following all other policies set by the organization. The Education Graphic Design Intern will maintain a professional manner when dealing with all constituencies and always preserve a high level of integrity, professionalism and confidentiality.

Authority and Accountability

The Education Graphic Design Intern has the responsibility to follow the education department philosophy, goals and objectives and is accountable to the education department. The curator of exhibit design is designated as the key supervisor for all aspects of the internship and to act as a liaison with the intern's university for academic purposes.


Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Actively participate in team/department meetings
  • Learn about and reference industry graphic standards
  • Create and revise graphics
  • Execute general office duties as they relate to projects and department needs
  • Perform related duties as assigned as they relate to the field of education


Working Conditions

The work environment will require work both indoors and outdoors with exposure to seasonal weather conditions.

  • Ability to commit for a minimum of a 13 week internship and work at least 8 hours per week (can be split up over multiple days)
  • Currently enrolled student in good standing at a university; ability to earn college credit for internship
  • Proficiency with graphic design software; preferably use of Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite; internet proficiency
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
  • Creative, friendly, enthusiastic
