The Events Intern is a paid intern position at the Detroit Zoological Society. The Intern will rotate between the Private and Public Event departments and assist the Events Managers, Supervisor, and Coordinators. He/She will have the opportunity to learn about all aspects of public and private events.

This internship will focus on hands-on experience and he/she will be responsible for event planning and event execution. This will include developing event ideas, working with local vendors, customers and staff, creating event documentation and executing on event timelines, This candidate will also have the opportunity to serve as the point of contact on designated event days.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist in developing event concept and themes
  • Assist with coordinating and execution of event logistics (e.g. banquet event orders, talent, vendors, etc.)
  • Assist with event timeline details (including timing for promotional materials, date logos need to be received from sponsors, date promotional materials will be displayed, dates event talent/activities need to be confirmed, etc.).
  • Assist with set up and tear down of events
  • Meet customers at the start of their event and serve as point of contact for any needs that may arise.
  • Participate in DZS activities, meetings and events as required
  • All other responsibilities and tasks as assigned by the Events Managers and Supervisor.

Working Conditions

Regular work schedule may include occasional evenings, weekends, early-mornings and holidays. The work environment is generally comfortable; some work is conducted indoors however the position does require work outdoors with exposure to seasonal weather conditions. This internship will run from May-August of 2019. Requires moderate physical effort on a daily basis such as walking, bending, stooping, lifting and standing for extended periods of time.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Must be a Junior or Senior level college student enrolled in a relevant degree program (Marketing, Communications, Hospitality, Events). 
  • Interest in actively learning about event planning and development.
  • Ability to multi task and use creativity to develop new event concepts.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Outgoing and friendly personality who enjoys working with people.
  • Work with accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work well as a team member or independently.
