The Adjunct Writing Instructor will teach writing to adult learners at the Detroit Zoological Society. The course will review proper grammar and sentence structure. The Adjunct Writing Instructor will also focus on technical writing, business writing and advanced writing throughout the course. He/She will develop course content consistent with official course syllabi, deliver course instruction to DZS staff, assist and advise students outside of class and assess student learning. The instructor will be required to review and grade writing of the DZS staff. The Adjunct Writing Instructor will work collaboratively with the Communications Director and Human Resources Manager to create and monitor course goals. He/She will provide feedback on students to his/her supervisor after each session.

The Adjunct Writing Instructor will support, both publicly and privately, the principles of the Detroit Zoological Society.  He/She will support and enhance a clean, safe, enjoyable, and educational experience at the Detroit Zoo facilities by actively engaging in the enforcement of Customer Service Standards, and specifically by knowing and understanding the Detroit Zoological Society's "SCOPE" of service, animal care, community relations and park appearance guidelines; by enforcing safety and security policies, and following all other policies set by the organization. The Adjunct Writing Instructor will maintain a professional manner when dealing with all constituencies and always preserve a high level of integrity, professionalism and confidentiality.

Authority and Accountability

The Adjunct Writing Instructor has the authority to carry out the job requirements and responsibilities and is accountable to Human Resources Manager.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Deliver course instruction to DZS staff using appropriate pedagogy
  • Develop course content consistent with DZS course goals
  • Provide DZS staff with feedback on all writing assignments
  • Respond to DZS staff requests in a timely manner
  • Submit course syllabi, enrollment verification, course evaluations and grades in a timely manner
Working Conditions

Work is performed indoors in a classroom environment and frequently outdoors. Exposure to video display monitors. Frequent exposure to the public by working in the Zoo, the community and with partner organizations. Additional grading and communication with staff will be done outside of the classroom.

Physical Requirements

Able to perform essential functions which typically involve seeing well enough to read standard text, often on video display monitors; public speaking, lecturing and giving clear instructions; standing or walking to guide small and large groups. Excellent interpersonal skills.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Minimum

  • Bachelor's degree or higher from a regionally accredited college or university in English, Literature, Writing, Rhetoric, Composition, Linguistics, Creative Writing or an interdisciplinary degree (from a regionally accredited college or university) that combines a focus in any of the listed fields or related fields 
  • Experience developing and teaching preparatory writing to adult learners in a corporate or professional setting
  • Experience using educational technology
