The Environmental Stewardship Internship Lead  (ESIL) will work directly under the supervision of the program coordinator from  June 25 August 16 Starting in June, Environmental Stewardship Interns will work as a part of our youth conservation program.

The Environmental Stewardship Intern Leader will support, both publicly and privately, the principles of the Detroit Zoological Society. He/ She will support and enhance a clean, safe, enjoyable, and educational experience at the Nature Center facilities by actively engaging in the enforcement of Customer Service Standards, and specifically by knowing and understanding the Detroit Zoological Society's "SCOPE" of service, animal care, community relations and park appearance guidelines; by enforcing safety and security policies, and following all other policies set by the organization. The Environmental Stewardship Intern will maintain a professional manner when dealing with all constituencies and always preserve a high level of integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality.

This job description is by no means all-inclusive and may be subject to change during a performance period due to the needs of the Detroit Zoological Society and its leadership. This document will be reviewed on a continual basis and will be modified as needed.

Requirements

  • Must reside in Detroit ( if in college, you must have a permanent address in Detroit)    
  • Must be between the ages of 16-19
  • Must be able to obtain a valid work permit before the start of the program if intern is 16-17 years old
  • Must be a high school or college student in good standing

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Report to the Belle Isle Nature Center or to the Detroit Zoo for duties
  • Attend and participate in meetings, scheduled on and off-site workshops and field trips
  • Attend educational enrichment classes provided for the interns
  • Interact with diverse audiences both orally and in writing
  • Collaborate with peers and staff on environmental conservation projects
  • Identification and proper removal of invasive species
  • Operate and utilize outdoor equipment and work tools
  • Document weekly experiences and create an end-of-program presentation
  • Participate in the Youth conservation Academy hosted by the DNR
  • Generate weekly reports and records
  • Assist in preparing for activities and events throughout the week
  • Execute and complete the chosen summer project
  • Must be available for the entire season, June 25 August 16
  • Other duties as assigned by the program coordinators

Working Conditions

Work is conducted both inside and outside and may include work in adverse weather with outside environment, heights and exposures. Position involves exposure to all types of weather, air conditioning and heating systems. Interns may be required to walk long distances around Belle Isle State Park. The regular work schedule may include weekends and holidays.

Physical Requirements

Physical work is part of the job and includes walking, standing, stooping, kneeling and bending for long periods of times; must be able to lift at least 20 pounds. The individual must have the ability to perform essential functions of the job satisfactorily.
