The Veterinary Technician supports the Chief Veterinarian and Associate Veterinarians by providing excellent and compassionate medical care to all animals to ensure their health and well-being and by contributing to outstanding guest experiences by ensuring that the living resident population is healthy.


Principal Duties and Responsibilities
• Perform or assist with medical treatments, anesthesia, surgery, radiology, dentistry, emergency medicine/critical care, neonatal care, necropsy and preventative medicine
• Collect, process and submit medical samples including blood, tissue, urine, and feces for diagnostic testing and banking
• Distribute biological samples to researchers, museums, and universities
• Assist animal care staff with operant conditioning training programs to facilitate medical treatment
• Clean clinical and non-clinical areas of the Animal Health Complex as needed
• Clean and maintain medical equipment; schedule routine maintenance and repairs of all medical devices and systems
• Assist with solicitation and selection of candidates for veterinary technician preceptorship program
• Supervise, instruct and assist veterinary technician preceptors and hospital volunteers
• Submit work orders for repair and maintenance of Animal Health Complex facilities
• Order veterinary supplies and equipment
• Maintain inventory of medications and supplies; ensure that medications are not expired
• Capture and restrain animals as needed
• Ensure compliance with relevant local, state, and federal regulations
• Provide written and verbal reports in the timelines established by supervisor(s)
• Conduct educational presentations in both formal and informal settings
• Maintain accurate and current records
• Perform data entry
• Maintains a high level of professionalism, integrity and confidentiality.
• Perform other duties as required


Working Conditions
Work is performed indoors and outdoors with exposure to all seasonal weather conditions, with frequent exposure to and contact with dangerous animals, with risk of zoonotic disease exposure (Hepatitis B, Herpes B, Tuberculosis, Salmonella and others), and with exposure to computer monitors. Weekend and evening work will be required as necessary.


Physical Requirements
The ability to perform principal duties is required. The Veterinarian Technician must be able to lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds. The Veterinarian Technician must be tested for tuberculosis on an annual basis.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Minimum
• Must possess a license as a Veterinary Technician in the State of Michigan
• Must be a graduate of an accredited veterinary technician training program, and possess either an associate's degree or a bachelor's degree from this program
• High personal motivation, self-management and attention to detail
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Strong interpersonal skills
• Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office programs
• Requires a valid State of Michigan Driver's License.


Preferred
• Previous zoo or wildlife experience working in the role of veterinary technician
• Experience working in private practice with exotic animals species
• Previous experience in a supervisory capacity.
