The selected individual will work with the Education team to develop, implement and evaluate programs and activities. The internship will include opportunities to work with experts from multiple departments. Education programming focuses on the DZS's commitment to conservation, animal welfare and environmental stewardship for Zoo guests and program participants. A significant emphasis will be placed on activities that enhance guests' on-grounds experiences through interactive, learner-driven experiences.  

The Education Intern will support, both publicly and privately, the principles of the Detroit Zoological Society.  He/She will support and enhance a clean, safe, enjoyable, and educational experience at the Detroit Zoo facilities by actively engaging in the enforcement of Customer Service Standards, and specifically by knowing and understanding the Detroit Zoological Society's "SCOPE" of service, animal care, community relations and park appearance guidelines; by enforcing safety and security policies, and following all other policies set by the organization. The Education Intern will maintain a professional manner when dealing with all constituencies and always preserve a high level of integrity, professionalism and confidentiality.

Authority and Accountability

The Education Intern has the responsibility to carry out the Education goals and objectives and is accountable to the Education Department. An Education Manager will be designated as the key supervisor for all aspects of the internship and to act as a liaison with the intern's university for academic purposes. 

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Actively participate in team/department meetings
  • Collaborate with education staff to create programs and activities
  • Implement programs and activities with program participants and Zoo guests
  • Work with teen and adult volunteers
  • Execute general office duties as they relate to projects and department
  • Perform related duties as assigned as they relate to the field of education

Working Conditions

The work environment will require work both indoors and outdoors with exposure to seasonal weather conditions. 

Physical Requirements

The ability to perform principal duties is required. The Education Intern must be able to lift and move objects weighing up to 25 pounds. Able to perform moderate physical effort on a daily basis such as walking, bending, stooping, lifting, and standing for an extended period of time. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform these essential duties.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to work in a collaborative, fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to be engaging and professional with program participants and guests.
  • Willing to work in a variety of outdoor and indoor environments.
  • Knowledge of inquiry-based learning pedagogy preferred.
  • Previous experience working in an informal or formal learning environment preferred.
  • Ability to communicate with colleagues through written and oral means.
  • Ability to receive, contribute and incorporate constructive criticism.


  • Currently enrolled student in good standing at a university; ability to earn credit for the internship
  • Ability to interact with various age groups in a professional manner
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite; internet proficiency
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
  • Creative, friendly, and enthusiastic
