Role

Volunteer Services provides support to the staff of the Detroit Zoological Society with a dedicated, trained volunteer corps made up of people who bring unique skills, a love of nature and a concern for the environment to ten different programs, including one at the Belle Isle Nature Center. More than 1,000 volunteers engage the visitors and the community in learning about wildlife and conservation through meaningful educational activities, dialog and special events. This position will provide hands-on experience in volunteer administration and involve all facets of the department

 The Volunteer Services Coordinator will support, both publicly and privately, the principles of the Detroit Zoological Society. He/She will support and enhance a clean, safe, enjoyable, and educational experience at the Detroit Zoo facilities by actively engaging in the enforcement of Customer Service Standards, and specifically by knowing and understanding the Detroit Zoological Society's "SCOPE" of service, animal care, community relations and park appearance guidelines; by enforcing safety and security policies, and following all other policies set by the organization. The Volunteer Services Coordinator will maintain a professional manner when dealing with all constituencies and always preserve a high level of integrity, professionalism and confidentiality.

 Authority and Accountability

The Volunteer Services Coordinator has the authority to carry out the job requirements and responsibilities and is accountable to the Volunteer Services Manager.

 

Principal Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Coordinate and support development of volunteer diversity recruitment plan
  • Work with the Education staff to develop and administer teen volunteer opportunities.
  • Assist with volunteer recruitment, check-in and placement for special events (early morning and evening shifts).
  • Contribute articles for and assist with editing the monthly staff/volunteer newsletter.
  • Participate in new volunteer orientations; conduct interviews and trainings for new volunteers.
  • Coordinate scheduling of volunteers, record hours in database and submit reports (requires learning Volgistics, an online service used by this department)
  • Execute general office duties as they relate to the daily operations of the project and department, including but not limited to: data entry, copying, filing, faxing, responding to requests for information, supervising special mailings
  • Partner with Volunteer Services Manager and Assistant Manager as needed; especially covering the office on their scheduled off days.
  • On a daily basis, coordinating volunteer activities throughout the facility
  • Assist volunteers in the office with general questions and purchasing uniforms
  • Other duties as assigned

 Working Conditions 

Regular work schedule includes evenings and weekends. Occasional early-mornings are required. The work environment is generally comfortable and most work is indoors although the position requires work outdoors with exposure to seasonal weather conditions for special events and various regular activities of the Volunteer Services department.

Physical Requirements Minimum

The ability to perform all principle duties. Requires moderate physical effort on a daily basis such as walking, bending, stooping and standing for an extended period of time. Able to lift up to 20 pounds.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Bachelor degree in human resources, event planning, marketing, communications or a related course of study or equivalent work experience.
  • Must be available for weekday, weekend and evening shifts; irregular hours required.
  • Working knowledge of Outlook, Microsoft Word, Excel, Publisher and PowerPoint; Internet proficiency.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Creative, friendly, enthusiastic.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work in a timely manner.
  • Ability to interact with various age groups in a professional manner. 

Preferred

  • Experience with volunteer administration is preferred.
  • Experience with event planning is beneficial.
