The Facilities Supervisor, under general supervision, will serve as the representative for construction, remodeling and renovation projects for the Detroit Zoological Society (DZS). The Facilities Supervisor will examines existing construction plans and specifications, makes recommendations for changes if appropriate and negotiates change orders. He/She will be responsible for maintaining records, documentation and drawings of all plans. He/She will research products and materials for construction projects. The Facilities Supervisor will monitor the contractors' work. He/She will be responsible for maintaining the DZS safety standards at all contractor work sites.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supervise, coordinate, or schedule the activities of construction or extractive workers
  • Provides on-site inspection and coordination of construction
  • Remodels projects to assure compliance with plans and/or specifications
  • Inspects all work in progress at construction and project sites
  • Acts as a problem-solver to contractors/sub-contractors
  • Serves as liaison between DZS departments and contractors
  • Negotiates necessary changes
  • Issues progress reports on all projects and updates the Facilities calendar accordingly
  • Assures timely completion of projects
  • Reviews invoices, verifies accuracy and approves for payment
  • Monitors construction and project budgets/expenditures
  • Assists Finance Department with RFP and RFQ content
  • Reviews shop drawings
  • Maintains all construction files and project files
  • Maintains drawings and photographs of all constructions and projects
  • Participates in the selection of potential bidders/contractors
  • Examines plans and specifications during all phases including verification of existing conditions, verifying dimensions and ensuring all plans and specifications are met
  • Conducts preliminary walkthroughs, as well as punch list reviews
  • Performs related duties as assigned

Working Conditions

Work is performed outdoors and indoors, all seasons of the year. Significant exposure to loud noises, mechanical or horticultural environments.  Will be exposed to industrial and agricultural equipment and chemicals, computer equipment and computer monitors, and all holding areas for many species of animals. Weekend and evening work will be required as necessary.

Physical Requirements

The ability to perform principal duties. Requires moderate to strong physical effort on a daily basis such as walking, bending, stooping, lifting and standing for an extended period of time. Ability to climb ladders, operate non-hydraulically-assisted mechanical equipment, and lift 50 pounds.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Bachelor's Degree in Construction Management (or similar field).
  • Five years of experience in project and construction management in an institutional setting.
  • Proficiency in Project, Primavera or similar construction management software.
  • Working knowledge of local and state codes and standards for construction.
  • Must possess knowledge of basic construction techniques and materials.
  • Familiarity with cost estimating.
  • Must function in a highly organized manner and possess excellent interpersonal skills. Must have excelled communication skills, oral and written.
