The Detroit Zoological Society is currently accepting resumes for seasonal positions for our Summer Safari Camp Program. As a member of the Education Team, staff will work with guests of all ages delivering educational programs promoting the Zoo's mission.

Responsibilities Include:

The chosen candidates will supervise daily camp activities during the Zoo's Summer Safari Camp program at the Detroit Zoo. Responsibilities include supervising up to 17 staff and as many as 2,500 youth grades K-12, over the course of the summer. The candidate will oversee staff and campers as they tour zoo grounds, set-up and assist with craft projects, lead activities and interact with other staff and guests. Supervisors will also oversee a small group of teen volunteers each day, insuring their success as they assist with the daily implementation of camp. Supervisors will interact with campers' parents/guardians as needed. Staff may be scheduled for day or evening programs during the summer. Programs are held mainly outdoors, in a variety of weather conditions. All candidates must attend training (June 18-22) prior to the start of camp and be available for the entire 8 weeks of camp (June 25-August 17).            

Qualifications:

  • 21 years or older
  • Current CPR, First Aid Certification preferred
  • Must be available for a flexible work schedule that includes days, evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.
  • Must be a good team player with excellent communication and people skills.
  • Ability to effectively supervise staff.
  • Must be available for the entire camp season, June 10 through August 18.
  • Must hold a valid operator license with an excellent driving record, chauffer license preferred.
  • Completion of a Bachelor's degree in General Science, Education, Zoology, Biology or other closely related field.
  • Two years of experience in a large zoological institution, formal learning institution, or a youth organization preferred.
  • Familiar with concepts and issues of biology, environmental or life sciences, animal welfare and husbandry, and similar disciplines preferred.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing with diverse audiences.

Work Environment: Work will be performed in an outdoor environment in various conditions. Employees must be able to stand and walk for long periods of time. While performing the duties of these jobs, the employee is exposed to seasonal weather conditions and the total Zoo environment. The noise level in the work environment is moderate. The employee must be able to lift and move 25 pounds. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
