As deputy to the Director of IT, the Assistant Director of Information Technology directs, plans, and manages the organization's information systems, infrastructure, enhancement and policies to assure the development and implementation of data processing, computer operations and related functions (communications, office systems, A/V equipment, production activities, etc.). As a member of the direct report team, participates in planning organizational growth and coordinating the strategic plan with the development of information systems.

The Assistant Director will be primarily responsible for implementing cybersecurity best practices and good cyber hygiene through continuous network monitoring to appropriately protect and maintain IT systems and devices at of the Detroit Zoological Society. It is important that the Specialist keeps abreast of industry security trends and developments, as well as applicable government regulations.

The Assistant Director of Information Technology will support, both publicly and privately, the principles of the Detroit Zoological Society. He/She will support and enhance a clean, safe, enjoyable, and educational experience at the Detroit Zoo facilities by actively engaging in the enforcement of Customer Service Standards, and specifically by knowing and understanding the Detroit Zoological Society's "SCOPE" of service, animal care, community relations and park appearance guidelines; by enforcing safety and security policies, and following all other policies set by the organization. The Assistant Director of Information Technology will maintain a professional manner when dealing with all constituencies and always preserve a high level of integrity, professionalism and confidentiality.

Authority and Accountability: The Assistant Director of IT has the authority to carry out the job requirements and responsibilities and is accountable to the Director of Information Technology.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities: 

Assist the Director of IT with the following:

  • Direct implementation and execution of new/upgraded information systems via well-defined plans including procedures, deadlines, and accountability.
  • Evaluate and implement IT procedures and equipment for maximum efficiency and cost containment.
  • Act as liaison to outside entities that are linked and support our IT activities.
  • Ensure users/customers are provided professional, courteous, and timely support and service.
  • Structure, lead, train, and develops IT staff for maximum effectiveness.
  • Stay abreast of trends and regulations to ensure effectiveness and compliance.
  • Create and monitor yearly IT/Project budgets.
  • Develop/select and conduct/coordinate user training on an as-needed basis.
  • Assist the staff to ensure that all reports are accurate and follow a consistent pattern that can be effectively used throughout the organization.
  • Ensure functional data processing support for organization through: reports, maintenance and updating of equipment and software, maintenance of membership and donor records, design and organization of data, troubleshooting, project scheduling and monitoring, on a daily basis, work status.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Director. 

Cyber Security Duties include:

  • Analyze and establish security requirements for DZS systems/networks
  • Respond to reports of security incidents, and engage the appropriate team members for handling support as needed. provide post-incident analysis
  • Leverage sound IT knowledge to identify/respond to common attacks through common vectors and methods with support from senior team members as needed
  • Execute routine tasks to further cyber investigations while maintaining integrity of evidence.
  • Defend systems against unauthorized access, modification and/or destruction
  • Configure and support security tools such as firewalls, anti-virus software, patch management systems, etc.
  • Define access privileges, control structures and resources
  • Work with Accounting department to implement strict credit card process configuration
  • Work with vendor to perform vulnerability testing, risk analyses and security assessments
  • Identify abnormalities and report violations
  • Documentation/reporting to meet PCI/ISO standards
  • Develop and update business continuity and disaster recovery protocols
  • Train fellow employees in security awareness, protocols and procedures
  • Research and recommend security upgrades
  • Assist Director of IT in reviewing, implementing, updating and documenting information security policies and procedures
  • Provide high-level of customer satisfaction to internal and external customers, applying necessary sense of urgency and creativity in problem identification and prompt incident resolution
  • Perform 24x7 on-call responsibilities as well as project related work requiring off-hours support
  • Additional duties as assigned 

Working Conditions: Work is primarily performed indoors and is generally comfortable. Work may be performed in computer rooms and at user locations throughout the Zoo and Belle Isle Nature Zoo. Some work may be performed outdoors with exposure to seasonal weather conditions for special events, tours, and presentations. Must be able to interact with the public; including donors, members, and others with a high degree of creditability and customer service. Weekend and evening work will be required as necessary.

Physical Requirements: This position requires the ability to work on all types of computer equipment and knowledgeably operate personal and laptop computers. Most work is performed while sitting but moderate physical effort such as walking, bending, stooping, and standing for long periods of time is required. Must be able to lift and carry 50 pounds. Exposure to computer monitors, fluorescent lights, air conditioning, as well as dry and humid conditions is part of the job. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (Minimum):

  • Bachelor's Degree in Information Systems, Information Assurance, Computer Science, Cyber Security or a related technical field
  • 2+ years of Experience managing network and system security
  • Proven experience with installation, configuration, management and troubleshooting of routers, switches, firewalls and other network devices
  • Proven leadership and hands-on experience in each of the following areas:
    • Managing and directly supervising technical employees
    • Managing the delivery of technical services including a help desk
    • Systems administration, network administration, and telecommunications in a mission-critical, multi-platform environment
    • Production control, change management, configuration management
    • Project management
    • Information security management
    • Significant knowledge and experience with the following platforms: Microsoft, Blackbaud, Gateway.
      • Microsoft Office Systems
      • LAN administration
      • Microsoft Windows Servers
  • Demonstrate practical skills in:
    • IDS/IPS, penetration and vulnerability testing
    • TCP/IP, computer networking, routing and switching
    • DLP, anti-virus and anti-malware
    • Firewall and intrusion detection/prevention protocols
    • Secure coding practices, ethical hacking and threat modeling
    • Windows, UNIX and Linux operating systems
    • Security Information and Event Management (SIEM)
  • Familiarity with Vulnerability Assessment tools
  • Familiarity with patch management software
  • Understanding of baseline Project Management Methodology
  • Excellent written, verbal, analytical, computing and organizational skills required.
  • Ability to work independently with little supervision, and also in a team environment
  • Must be creative, personable, detail-oriented, motivated and able to work


  • Active CISSP, CISM, Security+ Certification and additional certifications are a plus such as MCSE, CCNP, and CEH.
